HistoryMontgomery & Associates was founded in 1984, but the history of the company has roots back to the early 1960s. Dr. Errol Montgomery received his Masters degree from the University of Arizona in 1963 and his doctorate in 1971, working under the mentorship of Dr. John W. Harshbarger. Dr. Harshbarger was not only an internationally renowned hydrogeologist, but was also the founder of the University of Arizona's Department of Hydrology and Water Resources, a program distinguished by being both the first and highest ranking hydrogeology program in the country. During his degree programs, and after accepting an appointment as a professor in the Geology Department at Northern Arizona University, Dr. Montgomery maintained a close relationship with Dr. Harshbarger, working on a part-time basis for the hydrogeologic consulting firm Harshbarger & Associates. Dr. Montgomery soon returned to Tucson to rejoin Dr. Harshbarger's firm on a full-time basis, co-founding first a successor company to Harshbarger & Associates after Dr. Harshbarger's retirement in 1979, and later founding Montgomery & Associates in 1984. In the early days, Montgomery & Associates mainly served Harshbarger & Associates' mining and groundwater development clients. Services and clientele expanded over the years in response to changing demands for groundwater expertise. In the mid-1980s, Montgomery & Associates became a leader in the soil and groundwater contamination arena, responding to the EPA Superfund program. Artificial groundwater recharge and in situ mining projects became growing areas of work in the late-1980s. Montgomery & Associates continued expansion and diversification of its services by opening branch offices in Phoenix (Scottsdale), Flagstaff, and Santiago de Chile. By the early 1990s, Montgomery & Associates professional services had grown to encompass all aspects of groundwater and surface water investigations, including groundwater flow & solute transport modeling, vadose zone investigations, litigation support & expert witness services, and water quality compliance programs. In recent years, GIS & satellite image analysis, and environmental monitoring and information services have been added to our expanding expertise. Montgomery & Associates continues to look toward the future of our industry and the ever-changing needs of our clients. For further information about Montgomery & Associates, please contact us.
