Montgomery & Associates Hydrologist Joseph Baker receives Raytheon Corporate Environmental Health and Safety Innovation Award and is part of team honored at National Ground Water Association ExpoTucson, Arizona – December 7, 2002 – Montgomery & Associates hydrologist Joseph Baker recently received a Raytheon Corporate Environmental Health and Safety Innovation Award for his contributions to a successful pilot-scale study of in-situ oxidation of trichloroethene (TCE) using potassium permanganate. In addition, the Raytheon pilot study was recently recognized by the National Ground Water Association as part of the Outstanding Ground Water Projects Awards for Ground Water Remediation in the category of low-cost ground water remediation projects. Mr. Baker accepted the award for the team during the NGWA Ground Water Expo in Nashville, Tennessee in December 2002. Teaming partners included Raytheon Missile Systems (Tim Allen), Montgomery & Associates (Joseph Baker), Martin Barackman (previously with Montgomery & Associates), the University of Arizona (Mark Brusseau), IT Corporation (Jay Dablow), and the U.S. Air Force. Results of the pilot test were favorable, indicating a long term reduction in TCE concentrations of nearly 50%. TCE contamination associated with source zones typically imposes a limitation on the feasibility of any remediation technology to attain cleanup goals. Successful results from this pilot-scale effort at two different sites at the Raytheon facility demonstrate the usefulness of in situ treatment with potassium permanganate and will be used for design and implementation of this technology for continued remediation.
