| The 2004 AHS symposium was held on September
15-18 at the Radisson City Center in Tucson, Arizona. Dr. Errol Montgomery,
Mr. Ed McGavock, and Mr. Dan Weber presented at the symposium.
Dr. Montgomery discussed the natural
occurrence of perchlorate in groundwater in the Atacama Desert of
Chile. Interest in perchlorate has been expanding as the compound
has been detected in many drinking water supplies throughout the
nation. Dr. Montgomery's talk examined some of the natural and anthropogenic
sources of perchlorate. View

Mr. McGavock's presentation focused on
some of the challenges involved in developing water supplies in
northern Arizona. Unique hydrogeological conditions combined with
population growth will require considerable technical skill and
innovation to keep up with demand for water. View

In addition to serving as a volunteer on the Symposium Planning
Committee, Mr. Weber participated as both
a workshop coordinator and field trip leader. The workshop, Aquifer
Test Analysis Featuring AQTESOLV, was offered on September 15 and
conducted by Glenn Duffield, developer of AQTESOLV software www.aqtesolv.com.
AQTESOLV is considered the industry leader in computer assisted
design and analysis of aquifer tests. September 18 was the day of
the field trip, The Hydrology, Rangeland Ecology, and Wine of Upper
Cienega Basin. Mr. Weber gave a presentation on the seemingly unlikely
nexus of hydrology and fine wines. He briefly described how use
of hydrologic instrumentation can improve the overall quality of
wine grapes.
