Leslie Katz of M&A presented the 2004 Montgomery
Prize to HWR
Ph.D. candidate Justin Marble. His laboratory experiments are designed
to evaluate the effectiveness of in situ chemical oxidation using
potassium permanganate on remediation of TCE NAPL present in
fine-grained source zones.
For the past several years M&A has been proud to present
the Montgomery Prize, a $1,000 cash award, for the most effective
and informative oral presentation at the Department of Hydrology
and Water Resources (HWR) annual student symposium, “El Dia
Del Agua”. This year’s event was held at the University
of Arizona Student Union Memorial Center on March 3, 2004, and was
attended by 130 students, faculty members, and professionals from
Arizona’s hydrologic community. The 2004 Montgomery Prize
was awarded to Justin Marble, a Ph.D. candidate in the HWR Department,
for his outstanding presentation entitled “In Situ Oxidation
of TCE NAPL in Heterogeneous Porous Media: 2-D Flow-cell Experiments”.
The award symbolizes M&A’s commitment to promoting excellence
in carrying out and communicating research in the field of hydrology.

GeoDaze
Montgomery Prize 2004
Janis Blainer-Fleming of M&A presented
one of three 2004 Montgomery Prizes to Geosciences Ph.D. candidate,
Christa Placzek. Her research involves reconstructing the history
of mega-lakes of the Altiplano of Bolivia and what they indicate
about climate change.
For the past several years, M&A has presented
the Montgomery Prize, a $1,000 cash award, for the best overall
oral presentation at the GeoDaze symposium, a long-standing event,
organized by students of the Department of Geosciences at the University
of Arizona. This year, GeoDaze was held at the University of Arizona
Student Union on April 1 and 2, 2004, where more than 40 students
presented their research. The 2004 Montgomery Prize was awarded
to Christa Placzek for her outstanding presentation entitled ”Megalake
History and Climate Change on the Bolivian Altiplano Over the Last
120ka”. The award represents M&A’s commitment to
promoting excellence in research and communication in the geosciences.
